IKEA Dress Me Up Event
For a fourth year, IKEA West Chester, in partnership with Lakota’s art teachers, is hosted “Dress Me Up,” a community art fundraiser that benefits Lakota’s art program. There are two types of artwork being created – younger students had their paintings displayed in IKEA frames, while secondary students worked as a team to transform a solid pine three-drawer TARVA dresser into a work of art.
This year, the popular event featured 20 dressers and more than 60 framed art pieces. The framed artwork sold for $20 each, while the dressers go to the highest bidder. IKEA matches all contributions with all proceeds benefiting Lakota’s arts programs. Our dresser found a home with a Union family!!
The reception and silent auction was held Tuesday, April 26, from 6-7 p.m. at the IKEA West Chester location.

Students hard at work!
Union's IKEA Dresser
Here at Union, we decided to take on not only the framed work, but a dresser as well! Groups fourth through sixth grade, volunteered to abandon the spring weather at recess to come in and prime, design, and paint our IKEA dresser. Each group painting a dresser for the event works to create a design inspired by an artist or art movement. Our artist was Stuart Davis, an American artist known for his paintings of bold abstract shapes that he claimed were influenced by his love of jazz music. Look for our dresser, named Jigsaw Melody, at the event!
...and there's more! Students not only painted the dresser, but they started painting 2 shelves that will find a home in the STEAM room here at Union once they are completed. We are hoping to complete them by the end of this school year so that they can be put to use at the start of the 2016-17 year!
