2nd grade Collage Penguins!
2nd graders started off their semester of art with a penguin project. Students created the penguins using the collage technique- piecing the picture together with paper rather than drawing or painting. They were also introduced to several important art terms and how they are used in artwork. They learned that a horizon line is: the space where the sky and ground appear to touch. 2nd graders learned that scale, or the comparison of one size to another, becomes instrumental in creating the illusion of distance in a piece of artwork. For their collage, they placed smaller penguins toward the horizon line and larger penguins towards the front.
Color Mixing Tape Paintings
Students used thin strips of tape to create lines across their paper. When lines intersected, they formed different shapes. Each shape created a space in which students could explore color mixing using only the primary colors. Students looked to the color wheel as inspiration, and they were encouraged to create as many new colors as they could.
Faith Ringgold City Collage
We looked at the illustrations and artwork of artist Faith Ringgold, an American artist most well known for her story quilts. Students spent several classes making individual pieces of patterned paper with oil pastel patterns or crayon texture rubbings that they later painted with water colors. Students were encouraged to get creative with their patterns using line, shape and color. Once their papers were painted, the students pieced their picture together. They could choose to create their collage like Ringgold and make a city, or they could come up with their own environment where people live.
MORE PICTURES TO COME ONCE WE GET BACK AT IT AFTER BREAK!!!
Castle Printing
Students looked at different castles around the world. We looked more specifically at the Loveland Castle created here in Ohio. Students used Lego blocks to print each block of their castle. Then students created neutral colors to paint their castle. To see more about the Loveland castle, click the link here- Loveland Castle video
Clay Houses
The 2nd graders amazed me with their ability to work so well in clay! They constructed a small house (think fairy house, toad house) in class using slabs of clay and tools to make different textures. We discussed how the clay would chemically change after being in the kiln to ceramic (like a rock). They finished their clay projects with a little color! Sorry we don't have more pictures...my hands were covered in clay most of class!
Fireworks and Painting
The 2nd grade is gearing up for summer with these fireworks pictures. Students drew lines using glue, and then covered the lines with salt. Once that completed, they dabbed watercolors onto the salt and watched it move! When the fireworks were completed, students added the reflection of the light from the fireworks to the 'water' below using oil pastels.
End of the Year!
We celebrated the last few days of the school year with an open choice class. Students are typically too busy for free draw, so they were given the option this last art class. They could also build with geometric shapes or work on their portfolio. There are some amazing artists here at Union! we had some very creative sculptures, still life drawings, imaginary worlds... Sometimes the most amazing work comes from a little freedom with the supplies!
