3rd Grade Symmetry Collage Bugs
3rd grade students started their art semester off by created their own species of bug! Students folded paper as their line of symmetry and cut three different symmetrical shapes for the head, thorax, and abdomen of their bug. Next, they pieced together details using reflective symmetry to collage their design. When the bug was completed, students wrote a biography about their bug.
Charley Harper Birch Tree and Birds
Students looked at the art work of artist Charley Harper, a local artist most well known for his unique style of creating natural habitats and creatures using geometric shapes in his art work. Often you can find his work at nature centers locally in the Hamilton County parks. Students first created a winter background painting different values of blue by adding white while blending the background paint together. They splatter painted 'snow' to the background. Next, they created texture to their birch trees using a scraper and black paint. Then students created their own papers for the birds by either mixing primary colors or creating texture rubbings and then painting them. Last, student pieced their picture together using the paper shape by shape like Harper. These collage painting turned out beautifully! Outerspace Collage
Students started their outer space picture by blending chalk pastels to create some color in the background. Next they splattered 'stars' into the space. We looked at images from the Hubble Telescope online prior to creating our outer space collages. After adding planets, students were given the opportunity to put additional details on their pictures using pastels. Clay fish
3rd grade wowed me with their ability to make some creative little fish in clay. They used a variety of random supplies, from paper clips to pasta, to make patterns and textures on their fish. I only wish I had more photos, but my hands were covered in class all the time!
Bubble drawings
After learning a little science behind the bubble, students drew the refracted colors of the light spectrum seen on a bubbles surface using oil pastels. They finished each bubble with some white reflected light. Once completed, students were able to build with geometric blocks for a bit a free time!
